Coroner's Information

Should you be under the care and guidance of the Coroner,
the details on this page may be of assistance to you

Information and guidance should you be under the care of the Coroner’s Office:

If the deceased has been under medical care or supervision, or has been seen by a doctor within fourteen days of their death, then the doctor can issue a Medical Cause of Death Certificate. However, if the deceased died without being seen by a doctor, or if a doctor is unwilling to make a determination, the Coroner will investigate the cause and manner of a death. The Coroner will also investigate when a death is deemed to be violent, unnatural or where the cause of death is not known. A Coroner’s investigation may involve a simple review of the circumstances, the ordering of a post-mortem examination, or in extreme situations the opening of an inquest. Once the Coroner has passed their verdict on, during the investigations they will issue the relevant paperwork as and when it is necessary. The Coroner’s staff will keep you informed should this be the case.

When a death occurs and is sudden or unexpected the death may be reported to the Coroner in which case the police will be in attendance at the place of death on the Coroner’s behalf. The Coroner’s nominated funeral director* will be called to transfer the deceased to the hospital where it will await further investigation. After the Coroner has carried out their investigations, they will release the deceased to the funeral director and supply the appropriate paperwork to allow the family to attend the Registrar’s Office and
register the death.

*Please note- You are under no obligation to use the Coroner’s nominated funeral director for your funeral arrangements. They are only contracted to convey the deceased to the hospital.
